were you surprised by the low energy of chuck hagel today on the stand? many people felt he was coached by whoever coached barack obama on his first debate. >> well, you know it reminded me of the joke of the corpse at the wake, that is not to get in the way of drinking and remembering. this is a strange combination of meet the parents and a job interfere where you got to be sure to be unobjectionable, and you have to work with these same people who are berating you to make your tenture a success and you know these hearings are more about them getting a sound bite for their district back home with their interests or their nuclear weapons plan in it, and they're unfortunately not so much about educating anybody on serious issues that we face. so from that perspective senator hagel's demeanor was entirely understandable, and i can't even begin to imagine how incredibly it mustfrustrating it must have been for him. heather hurlburt and david schuster. be will he be confirmed? >> he'll be confirmed. >> john: welcome back to "viewpoint." and its time for the t

i think this will highly impact -- i think chuck hagel should be confirmed. if he were a democrat -- is he actually a moderate conservative, but if he were a democrat and were no, ma'am made, would the republicans oppose him you should those circumstances because of his views? his views actually are quite consistent with those of president obama. we just got re-elected. i think that given a vote that he will be confirmed, and i think once confirmed he will serve many that capacity well. >> as a republican who has served in a democratic administration and precisely to have a bipartisan approach, which is what bill clinton wanted, and that was the model, the paradigm for what this president was trying to do with chuck hagel, but now how does he reach out to republicans who have clearly rejected him in large numbers and have been abusive some in the process? >> well, he will have to go to the hell and work with them, and they -- i assume they still are great patriots. even though they may disagree with chuck hagel that they don't want it this country to be compr

i'm talking a about the delayed vote of chuck hagel to take over. joining me on the phone is bob franken. >> good morning. >> how did a minority in the senate succeed in pushing back this vote on hagel? >> as you know, the senate is in effect goffer earned by the minority. so, the minority can always exert its will, that's exactly what's happening here. number one. number two, the republicans right now are looking for some revenge. they got beaten in the election. you have barack obama the president out there basically tap-dancing on them. being more assertive. this is the way for the republicans to say we're not going to be pat. >> could they be wrong about that, might this ultimately threaten the confirmation? >> this is going to be based on impressions of washington. i think there's a view if something is stalled it's not going to up then it's going down and the break that's coming up with the senate is a long time, if there's anything about hagel that might come out damaging to him this is the time. the senate for years has run the charade of co
